Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Status epilepticus.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Male

Non-contrast enhanced axial section of the brain with window optimized to visualize the orbits. The scan shows multiple bilateral calcific densities in both globes involving the retinal margins.

Case Discussion

The findings on non-contrast CT of the brain in a 10-year-old male patient with a known case of tuberous sclerosis are compatible with retinal astrocytic hamartoma.

It is important to recognize these lesions. If they are viewed in unsuspected cases, a careful examination of the brain for tuberous sclerosis is mandatory, particularly if the patient has other clinical diagnostic criteria.

The differential diagnosis on CT would include retinoblastoma and they need to be differentiated.
