Rib enchondroma

Case contributed by Jeremy Jones
Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Right sided chest pain following minor trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

The lateral portion of the right 9th rib is expanded, but no definite fracture is seen.

ct

Coronal bone algorithm slices from a limited chest CT demonstrate an expanded right 9th rib as seen on the CXR.  There is cortical break laterally consistent with a pathological fracture.

Case Discussion

Features here are of a lucent rib lesion, with the top differential being a rib enchondroma although no pathological diagnosis was reached.  Pain following minor trauma suggests pathological fracture through the lesion which was confirmed at CT.
