Presentation

Esophageal varices, hepatitis, splenomegaly.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Liver : Right lobe shrunken.
Right hepatic artery arises from superior mesenteric artery.
Left hepatic artery arises from celiac trunk as normal.

Spleen : Enlarged. Splenic vein tortuous prominent.

Case Discussion

Right hepatic artery arising from the superior mesenteric artery is one of the common variants of hepatic vasculature, and is classified as type III under Michel's classification.

Otherwise of little implication, this anatomic detail may be very important in case the patient requires any surgery or interventional procedure, e.g. hepatic artery embolization.
