Right lower lobe pneumonia

Case contributed by RMH Core Conditions
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Likely AML. Febrile ?focus of infection.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Chest

x-ray

Very subtle increased opacity, perhaps with air bronchograms, in the right lung base beneath/through the right hemidiaphragm on the frontal view, with loss of the more black sign on the lateral view. This finding was not picked up prospectively (see subsequent CT).

Chest

ct

Airspace consolidation is seen within the posterior and lateral segments of the right lower lobe. This is associated with a small pleural effusion. The right upper and middle lobes, and the entire left lung, are clear.

There is minor mediastinal lymphadenopathy, which in this setting may be reactive. A hypodense hepatic segment 2 lesion is fluid density, keeping with a simple cyst. The remaining imaged upper abdominal viscera are normal for a non-contrast study.

Conclusion: Right lower lobe pneumonia.

Case Discussion

This case is an example of subtle finding on x-ray that are clearly present on CT, which was performed later the same day.
