Right vertebral artery arising from the right common carotid artery

Case contributed by Assoc Prof Craig Hacking

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

The right vertebral artery arises from the right common carotid artery. Other vascular variants are present including a retro-esophageal aberrant right subclavian artery and the left vertebral artery arising from the aortic arch between the left common cartoid and left subclavian arteries.

Case Discussion

It is rare for the vertebral artery to arise from a common carotid artery. As is common, this patient has several other vascular anatomic variants.

The vertebral artery may arise from the CCA, ICA or ECA 1 but this is very uncommon.
