Schwannoma/Neurofibroma

Case contributed by Trent Orton
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Left sided mass.

Patient Data

Age: young adult
mri

A well circumscribed mass demonstrates high T2 and low T1 signal.

Case Discussion

The patient went on to have this mass excised.

Histology

The tumor is a peripheral nerve sheath tumor. Most areas are most consistent with a schwannoma. However, in view of the presence of areas with a histologic appearance reminiscent of neurofibroma and the occurrence of rare axons within the lesion, a co-existing neurofibroma component cannot be excluded.
