Serous cystadenoma of the pancreas

Presentation

Non-specific abdominal pain, normal lab results. Past medical history: mastectomy due to right breast cancer.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

Large multicystic, lobulated pancreatic mass with typical 'bunch of grapes' appearance, pressing against the left periumbilical abdominal wall. Several intralesional macroscopic calcifications. No lymphadenopathy nor sign of vascular encasement.

Case Discussion

The mass was biopsied. The histopathology report was as follows:

Macroscopic description:

5 cylinders of tissue.

Microscopic description:

The tissue fragments are composed of cystic spaces, lined by low columnar or cuboidal epithelial cells. Nuclei are round and uniform.

Pathologic diagnosis:

Serous cystadenoma.

Serous cystadenoma of the pancreas is usually seen in female patients, especially those who are over 60 years old.
