Sesamoiditis - hallux sesamoid

Presentation

Age: 12 years
Gender: Male

Medial sesamoid is slightly sclerotic (arrow) and irregular in shape. 

Medial great sesamoid is also bipartite (arrow) as is the lateral.

Bone marrow edema in the medial sesamoid (arrow in axial). Bipartite medial great sesamoid with bone marrow edema on either side of the syndesmosis.

Minor soft tissue edema overlying the sesamoid (arrow in sagittal).

Case Discussion

Sesamoiditis is an inflammatory condition involving the sesamoid bones, usually a diagnosis of exclusion once other causes for sesamoid pain have been excluded.
