Sigmoid colon diverticulitis

Presentation

Left lower lumbar pain

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

 A relatively long segment of the sigmoid colon with multiple diverticulae is seen demonstrating mural thickening associated with evident pericolic fat stranding inkeeping with sigmoid diverticulitis.

No abdominal or pelvic free or localized fluid or gas collections noted.

Non complicated left inguinal hernia also noted with fat content and herniating sigmoid colon.

Case Discussion

4% of patient with colonic diverticulosis develop diverticulitis.

In this patient, NCCT scan was requested for exclusion of urinary tract stones. 

Sigmoid carcinoma, ischemic colitis & inflammatory bowel disease are the most important imaging differential considerations in such case.
