Abdominal pain and constipation.

Patient Data

Age: 17 years
Gender: Female

Significant distension of the sigmoid colon measuring up to 10 cm in diameter secondary to twisting of the distal part of its mesentery. No definite signs of intestinal ischemia.

No free fluid or collection.

Case Discussion

This study demonstrates features of a sigmoid volvulus: where there is clockwise rotation of the sigmoid colon and its related vascular pedicle, the scout view shows coffee bean sign.
