Slipped upper femoral epiphysis - pre and post pinning

Presentation

Left sided hip pain without a significant traumatic event. Reduced range of motion at the left hip.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female

Abnormality at the left femoral head. There has been marked slip of the metaphysis on the epiphysis - a slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE).

Post-operative film

Imaging following bilateral pinning of the femoral heads.

Case Discussion

SUFE in a young girl treated with pinning. Because of the risk of bilateral involvement, prophylactic pinning of the contralateral hip is performed in some cases.
