Superior mesenteric vein thrombosis

Case contributed by Michael P Hartung
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Abdominal pain and nausea.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

Complete thrombosis of the superior mesenteric vein extending to the portal-splenic confluence, with mesenteric congestion.

Case Discussion

Surprisingly little signs of abnormal small bowel despite complete thrombosis of the superior mesenteric vein. There is likely collateral venous flow allowing relatively normal perfusion of the small bowel to continue, and resulting in more insidious onset of symptoms.
