Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the talar head

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Foot pain on weight bearing. No history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female

Ankle joint

Diffuse bone edema of the talar head and adjacent neck. Small signal void subchondral lines parallel to the joint surface of the talar head. Slightly narrowed joint spaces. No further signs of degenerative joint disease.

Case Discussion

This finding is quite rare in the talar head. It probably has the same etiology as spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee or Freiberg's infraction of the 2nd metatarsal.
