Subacute combined degeneration of the cord - vitamin B12 deficiency

Numbness of both hands

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

There is an abnormal high signal on T2WI/STIR of the spinal cord involving the posterior columns, extending from C2 to C7, suggestive of a subacute combined degeneration of the cord.

Case Discussion

The location of the high signal within the posterior columns as well as its extension (length) is suggestive of subacute combined degeneration of the cord due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
