Presentation

Right hip pain on weight bearing.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Female

Large cyst in the pressure zone of the femoral head. Signs of osteoarthritis.

Depression of the subchondral lamina covering the cysts. More small subchondral cysts in the acetabulum.

Case Discussion

Subchondral cysts in the superior outer and middle third of the femoral head (pressure zone) may arise from bone contusion and synovial intrusion or osteoclastic resorption of necrotic trabeculae following avascular necrosis 1.
