Swallowed mussel shell

Presentation

Sudden onset of pain while eating a shellfish pasta dish. Still able to swallow solids and liquids, but ongoing discomfort ? foreign body

Patient Data

Age: 60
Gender: Female
X-ray

Density in the soft tissues anterior to the C6 vertebral body. Sharp contour, suspicious for shell fragment. Some associated soft tissue swelling.

Case Discussion

In theater, a lodged fragment of mussel shell was confirmed and removed with ease. No immediate or long term complications.
