Transient tachypnea of the newborn

Presentation

Respiratory distress requiring treatment with oxygen.

Patient Data

Age: 35 hours
Gender: Female

Nasal oxygen is being delivered. The patient is rotated. Interstitial opacification in all areas both lungs with thickening of horizontal fissure. Note sternal ossification centers projected over right lung. No effusions or pneumothorax.

Case Discussion

Transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN) is due to retained fetal lung fluid. This is re-absorbed over a period of approximately 24-48 hours and excreted in the urine. It is a benign self-limiting condition.
