Triplanar fracture

Presentation

Jumped off a swing.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Non-displaced vertical fracture at the tibial plafond extending through the epiphysis to the physis where it takes a horizontal orientation.

Non-displaced oblique fracture extending from the physis to the metaphysis to the dorsal aspect of the distal shaft of the tibia. 

The ankle mortise is aligned normally.  Small joint effusion.

Case Discussion

Appearances are in keeping with triplane fracture.  This is a fracture of adolescents as in this case.
