What is the difference between heterotopic "calcification" and heterotopic "ossification"?
Ossification has a "zonal" appearance (denser at edges and central lucent bone marrow, like bone). The distinction is important because ossification is suggestive of a nonaggressive process, whereas calcification can be associated with malignancies such as osteosarcoma.
