Presentation

Dorsal radial wrist pain. Gymnast constantly weight-bearing through hyperextended wrist.

Patient Data

Age: 15
Gender: Female
mri

Small region of marrow edema within a prominent dorsal ridge of scaphoid with adjacent thickening and hyperintensity of the extrinsic dorsal wrist ligaments/dorsal capsule.  No corresponding signal abnormality within the dorsal aspect of the distal radius.  Scapholunate ligament preserved.  Small volume fluid within the pisiform recess. 

Case Discussion

Scaphoid impaction syndrome with focal marrow edema within a prominent dorsal ridge of the scaphoid and adjacent thickening and hyperintensity of the dorsal extrinsic ligaments. Gymnastics is the typical clinical setting for this condition.
