Squamous cell bronchogenic carcinoma

Histology

Bronchial brushings

Malignant cells present. Abnormal cells are seen with delicate cytoplasm, enlarged nuclei, and coarsely granular cytoplasm, consistent with non small cell carcinoma. 

Endobronchial biopsies

Right bronchus intermedius biopsy invasive squamous cell carcinoma, moderately differentiated. 

The clinical history of an obstructing lesion and a right hilar mass is noted.  The specimen consists of multiple fragments of tissue covered by squamous type mucosa.  No normal ciliated bronchial epithelium is identified.  An invasive squamous cell carcinoma is seen underneath the surface mucosa.
