Cryptorchidism

Discussion:

MRI is more sensitive than ultrasound in detection of cryptorchidism and its level. Undescended testis appears typically isointense in T1 and homogenous hyperintense in T2, T2 fat sat and STIR.

Usually, contrast is not needed for detection. Atrophic changes of the testis (like decrease in size with decreased T2 signal intensity) and any associated penile deformities should be excluded.

Testes also exhibit strong diffuse restriction on MRI if these sequences feature in local protocol.
