Simple hepatic cyst

Discussion:

Histopathology

Gross description: Container "A" is labeled "left lobe liver" and consists of a 447 gram lobe (17.0 x 10.0 x 4.5 cm). The capsule is smooth with one white area (3 x 3.4 cm), and tense at one of the poles. Upon sectioning through this tense area brown, soft, friable material pours out from a simple cyst (10.0 x 7.5 x 4.0 cm). The cyst wall is thickened, directly underneath the white capsulate area, up to 0.2 cm. The cystic cavity is stained brown, with some adherent brown material. Another cyst (4.0 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm) is found adjacent to the first cyst, and it is filled with clear fluid. A white firm area (1.5 x 0.5 x 2.0 cm) is found between the two cysts. The remainder of the parenchyma appears unremarkable.

Final Diagnosis

Left lobe liver, resection: Two simple cysts, the larger containing necrotic debris. No evidence of neoplasm. No evidence of hydatid cyst.
