Presentation
Shortness of breath
Patient Data
Complete consolidation and incomplete collapse of the left upper lobe.
Bilateral patchy nodular opacities are in keeping with known metastatic lung cancer.
Hyperlucency at the left apex represents compensatory hyperinflation of the left lower lobe (Luftsichel sign), outlining the aortic knuckle and apex of the consolidated/partially collapsed left upper lobe.
Left-sided collapse and consolidation now involves the left upper lobe. The left upper lobe bronchus is occluded.
Small left pleural effusion.
Innumerable pulmonary metastases throughout both lungs, some demonstrating central cavitation.
Multiple enlarged hilar, subcarinal and mediastinal lymph nodes.
Case Discussion
This case nicely demonstrates the Luftsichel sign.
