Transient synovitis of the hip

Discussion:

Transient synovitis of the hip is self-limiting disease caused by acute inflammation of the synovial lining of hip joint. The exact cause of transient synovitis of hip is still unknown, some authors attribute to viral causes while others attribute to post-traumatic or allergic causes.

Generally it is seen in 3 to 8 years of age group with male preponderance. Adults can be affected 1. The chief complaints are acute hip pain and limping while walking. Differential diagnosis is septic arthritis.

Imaging features

  • US shows anechoic hip joint effusion with distention of joint capsule
  • MRI
    • the main indication of MRI is differentiation from septic arthritis
    • may show joint effusion and synovial thickening
    • on coronal T1 FS contrast study, the perfusion in femoral head is not decreased 2
