Hypertrophy of the abductor hallucis muscle is a rare condition that is usually present since birth, consisting of painless enlargement of the muscle belly with no underlying abnormality. The early presentation is usually soft tissue swelling of the foot, however later on in life the hypertrophied muscle can lead to entrapment neuropathy of the inferior calcaneal nerve which runs between the abductor hallucis muscle and the medial calcaneal tuberosity, known as Baxter neuropathy.
