Although the brain is central to most of neurology, the central nervous system includes all of the spinal cord and of course there is the peripheral nervous system beyond that.

Radiculopathies or nerve root lesions are very common in out-patient, GP and A+E settings and require dedicated imaging of the back. This is usually done by MRI to assess the cord.

There are emergency situations with spinal cord compression or cauda equina syndrome which need immediate neuro-surgery or oncology treatment and rely on prompt recognition and imaging.

Spinal pathology makes up a large portion of work for neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists.

Recognition of suspected spinal cord compression or cauda equina syndrome is important to get prompt imaging and then potentially limb saving treatment.
