What is the mechanism of injury?
Hyperextension against resistance results in an avulsion fracture of the extensor mechanism at the base of the distal phalanx.
There is an avulsion fracture of the dorsal aspect of the proximal end of the distal phalanx involving approximately 50% of the articular surface with dorsal displacement of the fracture fragment.
