Duodenal-jejunal bypass sleeve device

Discussion:

A duodeno-jejunal bypass liner (Endobarrier™) is an endoscopically-placed device, which is occasionally implanted in obese (BMI >40) patients with type II diabetes mellitus, who do not want or cannot have bariatric surgery, or there has been a failure of other therapeutic options.

It is anchored in the duodenum by a nitinol ring, followed by a 60 cm impervious polymer sleeve. The idea is to prevent absorption of the chyme (digested food) in the distal duodenum and upper jejunum, without the need for invasive bariatric surgery.

There are ongoing trials into its efficacy and safety.
