Case Discussion

Breast prostheses are a common incidental finding on chest radiographs and are surprisingly easy to miss unless specifically looked for. They will rarely be mentioned in the clinical referral and therefore, unless one presumes that any adult female may have them, are easy to overlook.

A study published in 2020 found that clinicians reviewing frontal and lateral chest radiographs had a median sensitivity of 71.7% (range, 41.7%–85.0%) and median specificity of 94.6% (range, 73.4%–97.5%) for detecting breast implants. The reviewing group of eight individuals comprised two of each of breast radiologists, plastic surgeons, residents and medical students 1.
