Presentation
Pain in the right ankle and foot with changes in skin colour, 3 months after trauma.
Patient Data
Patchy extensive bone marrow oedema.
Extensive soft tissue and muscle oedema with minimal enhancement.
Mild ankle joint effusion.
Case Discussion
MRI features are consistent with complex regional pain syndrome (Sudeck atrophy).
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is principally a clinical diagnosis, characterised by pain, stiffness, swelling, and discoloration.
CRPS follows a relatively minor trauma, but the exact cause is unknown. Radiologically, it is characterised by regional patchy osteopenia and soft tissue swelling.
