Presentation

Pain in the right ankle and foot with changes in skin colour, 3 months after trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
  • Patchy extensive bone marrow oedema.

  • Extensive soft tissue and muscle oedema with minimal enhancement.

  • Mild ankle joint effusion.

Case Discussion

MRI features are consistent with complex regional pain syndrome (Sudeck atrophy).

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), is principally a clinical diagnosis, characterised by pain, stiffness, swelling, and discoloration.

CRPS follows a relatively minor trauma, but the exact cause is unknown. Radiologically, it is characterised by regional patchy osteopenia and soft tissue swelling.
