Presentation

Acute-onset right hip pain and swelling following a fall.

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

The right hip prosthesis appears well seated and intact with the cerclage wire. Age-indeterminate subtrochanteric proximal right femoral fracture at the level of the cerclage wire with questionable surround callus formation.

Acute comminuted fractures of the distal right femoral diaphysis with approximately 1.6 cm lateral displacement of the distal fracture fragment. The surrounding soft tissue is swelling. The right femoroacetabular joint appears to be located. The visualised right knee appears intact. Vascular calcifications in the medial aspect of the right thigh.

Case Discussion

This represents a case of a femoral shaft fracture (FSF). The patient is an 80-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with right hip pain and swelling following a fall. An x-ray subsequently revealed a femoral fracture. Management included intramedullary fracture fixation.
