Presentation
CD: preterm (now day 14) newborn, generally stable. Right antero-lateral aspect of neck prominence - likely a branchial cyst - to review please.
Patient Data
1.8cm well defined soft tissue abnormality in the upper third of the right sternocleidomastoid muscle.
No other abnormality in the neck.
Case Discussion
This neck lump was noticed by the parents in the second week of life. It was not noticed on the baby check at birth. Week 2 of life is the typical time of presentation with a hard neck mass as in this case.
Fibromatosis is typically very well defined with a muscular appearance on ultrasound. Although alarming to parents it is a self limiting process that will resolve in the first few months of life.
