Parotid liposubstitution

Case contributed by Mohamed Mahmoud Elthokapy
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Asymmetry of parotid sizes in a patient without any local or systemic diseases.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male
ct

The left parotid gland shows an entirely fatty replacement of its parenchyma with multiple small intra-glandular lymph nodes.

The right parotid gland shows preserved soft tissue density with small intraparenchymal fatty foci.

Relatively prominent submandibular salivary glands bilaterally.

Bilateral submandibular and spinal accessory multiple rather prominent lymph nodes are seen likely reactive.

Case Discussion

Parotid liposubstitution (fatty replacement) is a natural physiological process, like ageing, however, it is subject to variations if associated with clinical conditions, for example, parotid liposubstitution in Sjögren's syndrome.
