Peritonsillar abscess

Presentation

Sore throat for the past 3 days. No associated nausea or vomiting.

Patient Data

Age: 50 years
Gender: Male

There is a low attenuating rim enhancing fluid collection along the lateral margin of the left palatine tonsil. There is associated effacement of the adjacent left parapharyngeal fat. There is also some oedema extending along the left posterolateral oropharyngeal wall extending to the margin of the nasopharynx superiorly and to the margin of the left piriform sinus.

Case Discussion

This is a case of a peritonsillar abscess.

Several aspirations were attempted in the emergency department. Otolaryngology was consulted who recommended antibiotics and an outpatient follow-up. On the follow-up visit, the patient's symptoms resolved.
