Peritonsillar abscess

Presentation

Two days of dysphagia/odynophagia. Fever, decreased PO intake, and muffled voice.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female

The palatine tonsils appear mildly enlarged demonstrates subtle heterogeneous enhancement. On the left, there is subtle rim-enhancing collection in the left peritonsillar region displacing the adjacent palatine tonsil anteromedially. More inferiorly, there is an additional low attenuating focus in the left peritonsillar region.

Case Discussion

This is a case of a peritonsillar abscess, likely with adjacent peritonsillar phlegmon.

The patient was seen by otolaryngology who attempted aspiration of the abscess. The procedure was aborted due to patient discomfort. The patient was prescribed antibiotics. An outpatient visit noted improvement in her pain.
