Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome

Presentation

Growth retardation with deficiency of growth hormones.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male

The MRI sequences demonstrate: 

  • ectopic posterior pituitary at the top of the infundibulum seen as a small region of high T1 
  • thin infundibulum well-visualised mainly on postcontrast sagittal sequence
  • hypoplastic anterior pituitary gland

Note incidental zipper artifacts on the sagittal sequences.

The clinical presentation and MRI features are most consistent with a pituitary stalk interruption syndrome.

Pituitary stalk interruption syndrome, also known as pituitary stalk transection syndrome, is a syndrome characterised by:

  • absent or hypoplastic anterior pituitary gland
  • thin or absent infundibulum
  • ectopic posterior pituitary location
