Psoas abscess (ultrasound)

Diagnosis probable

Presentation

Abdominal pain, vomiting and intermittent fever for the last two weeks.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

Abdominal examination with a curvilinear array probe (3-5 MHz) in the supine position reveals a well-circumscribed collection of about 330 ml adjacent to the right kidney in the area of right Psoas muscle. 

Case Discussion

A psoas collection may result from infections, trauma or abdominal interventions. The patient may present with fever, abdominal pain, pressure-related symptoms, vomiting or any combination thereof. This patient presented with Fever of Unknown Origin. There was no history of trauma or surgery, nor of Haemophilia. The patient was previously diagnosed as a probable case of malaria and was prescribed antimalarial medications.
