Presentation

Right flank pain and haematuria. History of oral contraceptive use.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound
  • right kidney measures 12.5 x 4.9 cm and shows mildly increased parenchymal echogenicity. An echogenic filling defect is seen in the enlarged main right renal vein which is extending into the inferior vena cava at the level of renal hilum. No flow is seen in the main renal vein. Supra and infra renal inferior vena cava is patent. Intrahepatic IVC is also patent.

  • left kidney measures 11.2 x 4.9 cm and shows homogenous parenchymal echogenicity with well-preserved cortico-medullary differentiation.

  • no renal calculi, cysts or hydronephrosis is seen on either side.

Case Discussion

Sonographic features are consistent with right renal vein thrombosis.
