Subungual exostosis

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Progressive right 3rd digit deformity, with pain and swelling. No previous history of nailbed sepsis or trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 13 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Features consistent with a subungual exostosis of the 3rd toe. This is best appreciated on the dedicated lateral view. There are no aggressive features radiologically.

Case Discussion

A well-circumscribed bone adjoins the terminal phalanx of the 3rd toe in the classical subungual location consistent with a subungual exostosis.

Subungual exostosis occurs mainly in children and adolescents as in this case.
