Presentation

Left-sided neck pain.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Ultrasound shows a left common carotid artery with diffuse, homogeneous, hyperechoic wall thickening with increased peak systolic velocity.

Internal and external carotid arteries show preserved calibre with systolic peaks within normal values.

Case Discussion

The transverse image above shows the Macaroni sign, which is a homogenous, hyperechoic thickening of the common carotid artery wall. On ultrasonography, it is typically found in Takayasu arteritis.
