There is a bone contusion of the medial aspect of the patella as well as the lateral femoral condyle seen as an area of low signal on T1WI and high signal on PD fat sat. Disruption of the medial patellar retinaculum with joint effusion is noted.

Both menisci, cruciate ligaments are intact.

Case Discussion

The pattern of the bone contusion involving the patella, and the lateral femoral condyle, as well as the presence of a disruption of the medial retinaculum with joint effusion, suggests the diagnosis of transient lateral dislocation of the patella.
