Lateral medullary syndrome, also called Wallenberg syndrome, is caused by an acute ischemic infarction of the lateral medulla oblongata most commonly due to the occlusion of the vertebral artery (intracranial part) followed by posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) and its branches.
