Detection of a transition point is important for bowel obstruction interpretation i.e. the site of obstruction and possible cause. Adhesions are the presumed mechanism in many cases (following previous surgery) especially small bowel obstruction but rarely is the exact point of adhesive obstruction seen on CT as a focal kink and narrowing of the lumen by extrinsic compression.
