What are diverticula?
Are small herniation of the inner layer of the colon (mucosal) through its wall, for a few points of weakness where the blood vessels enter.
What are some of the differential diagnoses?
Colorectal carcinoma, epiploic appendagitis, inflammatory bowel disease
What are the complications?
Recurrent episodes of diverticulitis, especially in young people; Peritonitis; Fistula formation (usually sigmoid with the bladder); Bowel obstruction; Abscesses; Recurrent intestinal bleeding; Profuse intestinal bleeding;
There is in the left iliac fossa a segmental wall thickening of the descending colon, associated with thickening of the adjacent fat planes, with heterogeneous enhancement after contrast agent, suggesting edema. No evidence of mechanical obstruction, adjacent collections or other signs of complications.
