What is covering the eyes of the patient?
A radiation shield. Placing a shield over the eyes (or breasts when scanning the abdomen) significantly reduces the dose to the underlying tissues (in this case the lenses which are prone to cataracts).
How is a scout film obtained?
The x-ray tube/detectors remain stationary (in this case to the left and right of the patients head) while the gantry is moved. The result is an image similar to a conventional x-ray.
Lateral planning CT scout demonstrates a large number of radiopaque rounded foreign bodies predominantly overlying the forehead. Note how the fragments over the forehead are flattened, whereas the ones elsewhere are more rounded.
