VACTERL and Morgagni hernia
VACTERL association is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the following anomalies:
vertebral anomalies, e.g., hemivertebrae, and fusion of thoracic vertebrae
anal atresia
cardiac anomalies, e.g., ventricular septal defect and overriding aorta
tracheoesophageal fistula
renal anomalies, e.g., renal agenesis
limb anomalies, e.g., radial aplasia
Morgagni hernia, also known as a retrosternal hernia, is a form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia that results in the protrusion of abdominal contents into the thoracic cavity via a defect in the diaphragm. Respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms may be present. For example, a patient may present with dyspnea, difficulty feeding, or vomiting.
Overlap between these two entities has been described, underpinning the complexity of congenital conditions and their potential association with one another.
