Glandular odontogenic cyst

Discussion:

A well-delineated osteolytic lesion of the left mandible. The radiological differential includes odontogenic keratocyst and ameloblastoma.

Histological findings

  • fragments of lamellar bone with surrounding osteoclastic activity
  • occasional multinucleate giant cells are seen focally
  • focally, there is a rim of fibrous tissue and is covered by attenuated  squamous  epithelium  with focal areas of ciliated cuboidal type epithelium with areas of mucin vacuoles
  • there is no corrugated parakeratinised squamous  epithelium  seen  which  is typically seen associated with an odontogenic keratocyst

Histological DDx: in view of the presence of ciliated cells, the differentials include periapical cyst, dentigerous cyst with ciliated metaplasia or nasopalatine cyst.
