Fat necrosis is a benign process that occurs in the breast due to prior trauma. The onset of fat necrosis can occur as early as 1.5 and as late as 10 years after trauma. The finding of fat necrosis on mammography is given a BIRADS 2 and no additional imaging or follow-up is required.
