The colour comet-tail artefactartifact is an ultrasonographic sign seen in a number of situations, when colour Doppler scanning is performed.
Typically the artefactartifact, which resembles the grey-scale comet-tail artifact, is seen in situation when a small highly refractive (usually calcific) object is interrogated with colour Doppler. Twinkle artifact occurs and immediately deep to the object a tail linear aliased band of colour extends away from the probe.
The following are situations in which this sign may be present and helpful:
- small renal or ureteric calculi
- small common bile duct stones
- adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder
- pancreatic calcifications of chronic pancreatitis
- testicular microlithiasis (sometimes)
- identification of foreign bodies
- surgical clips
- catheter tips
- debris / glass / metal
